!!! (Chk Chk Chk)

chkchkchk

!!! (generally pronounced "chk chk chk") is a dance-punk band that formed in Sacramento, California, in 1996. The band's name was inspired by the subtitles of the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy, in which the clicking sounds of the Bushmens' Khoisan language were represented as "!". However, as the bandmembers themselves say, !!! is pronounced by repeating thrice any monosyllabic sound. Chk Chk Chk is the most common pronunciation, but they could just as easily be called Pow Pow Pow, Bam Bam Bam, Uh Uh Uh, etc.

SINKANE

sinkane

Ahmed Gallab has had a busy few months. Not only has he just released his debut record Mars for DFA Records under the name Sinkane, but his band played seemingly every CMJ showcase, sometimes performing at three shows in one night. While Sinkane is a newcomer to the scene, Gallab has years of experience under his belt performing on a variety of instruments for a handful of notable indie outfits including Of Montreal, Caribou, Eleanor Friedberger, and Yeasayer. Gallab was born in Sudan but now calls Brooklyn home. His music reflects that geographic span, incorporating the raw edges of Brooklyn rock with the cosmopolitan smoothness of his globe-hopping upbringing.
